What is an Engineer Doing Trying to Become a Writer?
And actually succeeding. At literary fiction.
You know, this first book is going to come as a shock to a lot of my friends. It is still a bit of a shock to me. And it has cost me some sweat, tears and…thankfully, not blood.
It has been a 5 to 6 years journey from conception, to execution, and delivery to knock out this first book. I expect my next work/s to be less strenuous.
Some insight to my background. I have been a chartered process engineer in the oil and gas industry for over two decades in over 3 continents and 7 or 8 major firms. I am quite decent at my work. But at heart, I think I was always meant to be a writer, an artist or/and a poet. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job, and I have done (and am doing) very well at it.
But there is something about creating that is unbeatable and rewarding in a different way. Staring into the blandness and blankness of a white piece of paper or canvas and attempting to distill one’s thoughts and feelings. And actually succeeding. And then, bellyaching over the details of what has been created. I think some of my training as an engineer actually helped in the process. But that is a story for another time.
Right now, my desire is to create. While keeping my day job as an engineer. For now.
What do you think?
